DOCSIS upgrade for holiday parks

For a holiday park with approximately 200 chalets A transition from DOCSIS 3.0 to DOCSIS 3.1 is often worthwhile, but only if the rest of the infrastructure and the business case justify it. The biggest benefit lies not only in higher speeds, but also in more capacity and a better user experience when many guests are online at the same time.

Here are the most important points:

1. The current coaxial infrastructure

First check whether the existing coaxial cable wiring is suitable.

Think of:

  • quality and age of the coaxial cables;
  • state of splitters, attenuators and amplifiers;
  • level of interference (noise and glare);
  • quality of connectors.

DOCSIS 3.1 uses higher modulations (up to 4096-QAM), which makes the network much "cleaner" than with DOCSIS 3.0.

2. CMTS or CCAP

The central equipment must support DOCSIS 3.1.

That often means:

  • a software upgrade;
  • new line cards;
  • or a completely new CCAP solution.

This is usually the largest investment, In addition to the network itself, all equipment and passive components must be suitable for the new signal that goes to higher frequencies.

3. Cable modems

All DOCSIS 3.0 modems will eventually have to be replaced by DOCSIS 3.1 modems.

For 200 chalets, that means approximately:

  • 200 new modems;
  • possibly modems with integrated WiFi 6 or WiFi 7.

Many operators combine both upgrades. Keep in mind that Docsis 3.1 modems are currently much more expensive to purchase than Docsis 3.0 modems. It only makes sense to offer Wifi 6 or even 7 if your guests' equipment also supports it!

4. Bandwidth to the internet

A DOCSIS 3.1 network is of little use when The total bandwidth of the park internet connection is too small.

At 200 chalets In conjunction with Docsis 3.1, it is often thought of as:

  • At least 2 to 5 Gbit/s internet capacity;
  • Depending on:
    • streaming;
    • IPTV;
    • working from home;
    • gaming.

With Docsis 3.0, the park often has enough bandwidth at 1 Gbit/s.

5. Segmentation

Often the network has grown historically.

When upgrading, it may be a good idea to:

  • installing additional fiber optic cables to the neighborhood cabinets;
  • make the coax segments smaller;
  • connect fewer homes per segment.

That often yields more than just activating DOCSIS 3.1.. Also if Docsis 3.0 remains in use

6. Upstream

A major advantage of DOCSIS 3.1 is the improved upload capacity.

Steeds meer toepassingen vragen daarom:

  • videobellen;
  • cloudopslag;
  • beveiligingscamera's;

7. Toekomstbestendigheid

DOCSIS 3.1 vormt een goede tussenstap richting:

  • Full Duplex DOCSIS;

  • het coaxnet technisch in goede staat is;
  • de eigenaar de komende 5 tot 10 jaar op coax wil blijven;
  • gasten steeds hogere internetsnelheden verwachten;
  • het park veel streamingdiensten gebruikt;

At Open Minded IT, we are both thinkers and doers. When our fiber optic cable was cut during construction work and we were unexpectedly left without internet, Open Minded IT came up with a temporary solution so that we could bridge the gap for a few days. Hats off!!!

Simon is a hero. High-quality solutions that many others would run away from. I got to see how the internet and television are rolled out in large holiday parks. Super cool. You can even call Open Minded for very complex satellite connections with all the additional hassle. Fortunately for Simon, they know that even abroad.

What a great company to work with. Big enough for the real work, small enough to be easily accessible when you have a problem. But most importantly: fast, adequate and professional, ensuring that our IT and telephony are back up and running within the shortest possible time in the event of any problems. TOP !
